Does Waxing Hurt? And Other FAQ About At-Home Hair Waxing – Vidasleek

In 2019, 6.97 million Americans waxed 4 or more times; 13.2 million said they didn’t wax at all.

Perhaps you fall in the latter category but are seriously considering retiring your razors and picking up waxing.

But does waxing hurt? Can you wax while menstruating?

If you have a bunch of questions floating around in your head, then keep reading. We’ll tackle some commonly asked questions about waxing so you can have peace of mind and confidence when you finally try waxing.

Does Waxing Hurt?

First things first: does waxing hurt?

We’ll be honest with you. Yes, it does. But only for the first few times!

This is because your hair’s pretty coarse before you wax for the first time, and you’re not used to the sensation of waxing. So when you actually do it, it can be a bit painful, and you may be in a little bit of shock the first time you pull a wax strip off.

The good news is, after you’ve waxed a few times, the pain should decrease as you do more sessions. This is especially true if you keep up with a regular waxing schedule, such as every 4 weeks.

The less hair that grows back, the better. Not only will it grow back finer, but it’ll also be shorter, which will make it easier to remove. As a result, you should feel very little pain, if any at all.

If you’re scared about pain for your initial waxing session, you can always take ibuprofen or aspirin 30 minutes before you start waxing to lessen some of the pain.

How Long Does Waxing Work For?

In general, waxing will keep unwanted body hair away for about 3 weeks. For waxing to be efficient, you need some hair for it to work; around 1/4 to 1/2 inch long. If you can easily pinch your hair, then it’s time to wax again!

As we’ve said above, we recommend you wax every 4 weeks. That’ll give it enough time for you to have adequate outgrowth for hair removal.

Are There Adverse Reactions to Waxing?

The skin can be a very delicate organ, so it’s very possible you may have some adverse reactions to waxing. For example, your back, chest, and upper lip areas may have more breakouts.

Also, if you’ve previously shaved and noticed ingrown hairs and irritation afterward, then there’s a chance this may happen with waxing as well. However, because waxing is a different hair removal method to shaving, if you do get ingrown hairs and irritation, it’ll be less prominent than with shaving.

The key to keeping ingrown hairs and irritation away is proper aftercare. Make sure you exfoliate and moisturize!

Can You Wax While Menstruating?

The simple answer to this question is “yes.” There should be no reason why you can’t wax while you’re on your period.

However, you may not feel so comfortable during this time. You might be suffering from cramps already, and you’ll have to use a tampon while waxing so you don’t stain any surfaces you’re on.

Also, you might be more sensitive to pain while you’re menstruating. However, studies show some women are less sensitive to pain during their periods, so just listen to your body and let that determine whether you should wax while menstruating or if you should wait until you’re off your period.

The key thing is that you’re comfortable while waxing. So for instance, if you don’t use tampons and don’t want to sit on towels to wax, you might want to wait until you’re done menstruating to do it.

Can You Wax While Pregnant?

You can definitely wax while you’re pregnant! In fact, for many pregnant women, their hair grows faster than before, so waxing can be a great way to keep unwanted body hair at bay.

Just make sure the products you use don’t have anything toxic in them, as it can be passed on to your baby. Sugar waxing kits are great to use since all they have are natural products, such as salt, sugar, and lemon juice.

Is There an Age Limit for Waxing?

No, and that’s what makes this so great! If you have unwanted body hair at any age, you can wax it off safely.

With shaving and other hair removal methods, you may have to use products that have harmful chemicals in them. But with waxing, there are plenty of products like sugar waxing kits that use completely safe and natural ingredients for a great waxing experience.

Is Waxing Bad for Any Health Conditions?

While waxing is safe for the general population, there are some health conditions that may make you a bad candidate for waxing.

For example, if you have diabetes, varicose veins, poor circulation, or are taking Accutane, you might want to avoid waxing. All of these conditions can cause you to have adverse reactions and/or make you more susceptible to infections.

Why Wax Instead of Shave?

Waxing may initially seem like a pain when compared to shaving and other hair removal methods. However, it has much better benefits!

With shaving, you’re removing hair from the surface of your skin. But with waxing, you’re removing hair from its roots. As a result, it’ll take much longer for hair to regrow with waxing.

Also, because you’re removing whole hair particles instead of chopping them off (as you do with shaving), your hair will grow back sparser and finer. When you shave, you leave blunt ends, so when the hair grows back, it’ll seem thicker and coarser.

Try Waxing for Smooth and Hair-Free Skin

So, does waxing hurt? It can initially, but over time, your hair will be finer and there will be less of it to remove, which means the pain will be minimal, or even non-existent!

Considering hair takes a lot longer to grow back when compared to shaving, plus your skin feels a lot smoother,
