Christmas Sugar Cookie DIY Lip Balm Recipe

Sharing is caring!

This DIY lip balm recipe isn’t like all the others. This homemade lip balm recipe infuses tea bags into oil to achieve a special scent and taste! Infusing tea bags into oil is super easy so no worries! Plus, this recipe contains only natural ingredients and will quench your dry lips with one application! This sugar cookie lip balm is such a novel recipe you will want to make a whole batch to give away as gifts this holiday season!!

Happy holidays everyone!  Santa is coming and just maybe he’s sick of eating cookies everyone leaves him…..  and just maybe he’d be excited about getting DIY SUGAR COOKIE LIP BALM?!  Ha, probably not, but how fun is a sugar cookie lip balm?!  It’s an easy recipe that is super nourishing, not to mention yummy for your lips!

This DIY lip balm is a bit different from the usual lip balms we make. This time we are infusing tea bags into the grapeseed oil! You might recall we did this with the DIY Pumpkin Pie Lip Balm. This is a super easy process but flavors up the oil quite a bit. Basically, instead of steeping a tea bag in water, you’re steeping it in oil but much slower and for a longer amount of time. This is a very simple way to make a very unique yet natural diy lip balm!

DIY Lip Balm Ingredients:

This recipe calls for grapeseed oil because it is a scentless oil. If you don’t have grapeseed oil, there are several other odorless oils that will work just as well. Sweet almond oil, REFINED coconut oil, apricot seed oil, jojoba oil, safflower oil and MCT oil a.k.a fractionated coconut oil are all great alternatives. I do not recommend using olive oil due to it’s strong scent.

Beeswax pellets are an absolute must since they are what thicken the oil into a solid balm. You can add more beeswax to create a firmer lip balm. Beeswax is actually a very beneficial ingredient in lip balms since it creates a barrier over the lips which helps protect the sensitive skin of the lips. Beeswax also has moisturizing qualities. Because we are using beeswax this is not a vegan lip balm. Candelilla wax or carnauba wax are plant based waxes. They tend to make balms a bit harder than beeswax. I wrote a post all about Comparing and Deciphering Vegan Waxes for Balms if you’d like to know more about making your diy recipes vegan.

If you’d like to up the anti aging properties of this lip balm, you can add vitamin E oil. I would add 1 teaspoon.

In any other lip balm recipe I would recommend adding shea butter or cocoa butter but since we want the scent and flavor of sugar cookies, I would skip both of these butters. Kokum or mango butter are odorless butters and if you’d like to add either of those I would add 1 tbsp. to this recipe.

I also added vanilla extract and sugar to up the scent and flavor. You don’t have to add them but they do kick up the novelty of this DIY lip balm quite a bit! The sugar will dissolve in the heating process and the vanilla should mix in depending on the vanilla extract brand. If you’d prefer, you can use about 5 drops of vanilla essential oil instead.

Infusing sugar cookie herbal tea is what makes this homemade lip balm recipe so special. Plus, sugar cookie tea is also lovely to drink!

How To Properly Make a DIY Lip Balm:

When making homemade balms, you must use the double boiler method in order to not overheat the oils and waxes. When creating a double boiler all you need is a small pot and a glass pyrex measuring cup or a small glass bowl or cup. This method keeps the heat lower and protects the emollient and healing properties of the ingredients. The point of lip balm is to moisturize the lips and you want to keep the benefits of all the ingredients intact. I never recommend using a microwave in any DIY skincare recipe.
