“One side will make you grow taller, and the other side will make you grow shorter.”
“One side of what? The other side of what?” thought Alice to herself.
“Of the Mushroom” said the caterpillar, just as if she had asked it aloud. Alice in Wonderland

Christopher’s Wheeldon’s contemporary ballet Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland contains my favorite depiction of the blue caterpillar. Ballet dancer Eric Underwood dances the role that Wheeldon created especially for him, with sensuous movements and sinuous limbs. Underwood’s blue caterpillar seems to almost mesmerize Alice as he presents her with a piece of hallucinogenic mushroom to eat. I was similarly mesmerized by 2 x Art & Olfaction award-winning American perfumer Amber Jobin of Aether Arts Perfume The Blue Caterpillar.

Aether Arts Perfume The Blue Caterpillar opens with a beautifully tempting and soft blend of apricot, tobacco, and vanilla. This unusual combination is sweetly grounded with a tide of intrigue leading me to sniff my wrist over and over. Amber explains her inspiration for the scent, “While Alice and the other main characters are often used for perfume briefs, I kept coming back to the languid but rather stern caterpillar perched upon a magical mushroom. Mushroom is an unusual perfume note that can easily overwhelm a scent with its strong character but the mellow, warm sweetness of tobacco seemed not only the perfect foil, but a unique pairing yet to be explored.”
Smoky nuances carry The Blue Caterpillar forward through time. After about an hour of the opening mushroom accord, a heady English rose opens on my skin. Warm pinks with flushes of musky incense and streaks of aromatic licorice add to the classic fruity and powdery notes of rose. This scent is serpentine in its movement and quite seductive with its low center of gravity and radiant aura.
The Blue Caterpillar Art by Rachel
Aether Arts Perfume The Blue Caterpillar starts to dry down with creamy sandalwood whose warmth is a seamless transition from the smoky rose of the heart. Woody earthy moss keeps the fragrance willowy. Amber sweetness lingers deep into the evening. The Blue Caterpillar is one of the most interesting and unique fragrances I’ve had the pleasure of wearing in a long time.
Note from Aether Arts Perfume: “Aether Arts Perfumes are at Extrait/Perfume Strength in a voile format (sprayable oil) and available in both sprays and roller style bottles.”
