Are Taliah Waajid shampoos any good for locs? It can be a struggle finding out which shampoos are good for your hair. Perhaps you are familiar with the brand before starting your loc journey, and are curious if Taliah Waajid shampoos are good for locs. For those who don’t know, Taliah Waajid is a longstanding natural hair care brand tailored to the black community started by a black female entrepreneur who named the brand after herself. They have a few shampoos that I have reviewed below.
What I like about this product is how high aloe is on the list (2nd). The green apple extract is the 9th ingredient. Overall, there is nothing special about green apples for hair, however you may like the scent.
Conversely, this product is not a strong cleansing shampoo, which is often needed for locs.
- Cleansing Agent: sulfate free (Cocamidiopropyl Betaine)
- Pros: very gentle shampoo with light moisturization provided by the aloe vera
- Cons: weak cleansing capacity, may leave residue
Top 5 Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Aloe Barbadenis (Aloe) Leaf Juice, Cocamidiopropyl Betaine, Cocamidiopropylamine Oxide, Glycol Distearate,
This shampoo is probably the most cleansing option I saw. It has sulfonate which is gentler than some sulfates, but still has good cleansing capacity. There are a number of reviews from people with locs for this shampoo as well. While it’s not marketed on the shampoo, I liked that it contained some beneficial ingredients such as rosemary, yarrow root, and nettle leaf.
Dislikes on the shampoo include how high parfum is on the list (7th ingredient). But if you aren’t sensitive to scent you may not mind.
- Cleansing Agent: sulfate free (Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate & Cocamidopropyl Betaine)
- Pros: positive reviews from locers, leaves hair feeling soft, can be used as body wash
- Cons: high parfum, reviews of poor packaging
Top 5 Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Cocamidopropylamine Oxide, Polyquaternium-7
**Are Design Essential Shampoos Good For Locs?**
This shampoo has some interesting ingredients. However, they’re pretty far down the list. The cleaning agent is similar to their other shampoos too, so not much difference there. I’d skip this shampoo if you’re buying it for the marketed rosemary (16th ingredient) wild sea moss (18th ingredient). It claims to have “aloe nutrients” however I couldn’t find aloe on their ingredient list. Perhaps they are referring to the shampoo containing nutrients common in aloe. If so, it’s misleading.
Instead, you can try one of their other shampoos. However, if you don’t care as much, then you can give this product a shot as the ingredient list is otherwise solid and contains no parabens.
- Cleansing Agent: Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate
- Pros: decent natural shampoo
- Cons: marketed ingredients are far down the list or not on the list at all
Top 5 ingredients: Aqua (Water), Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Cocamidopropylamine Oxide, Glycol Distearate, Laureth-4

Overall, I was pleasantly surprised when reviewing the ingredients for Taliah Waajid’s shampoos. I personally prefer a stronger cleansing agent for locs, but if you are looking for something more gentle, this a great alternative. Moreover, most of the time the leading ingredients were higher up the list. Their shampoos inspired me to check out their hair oils, which unfortunately I found very disappointing. I’ll post a review on those next.
