Waxing your butt is something that a lot of people do, but it’s not really something that a lot of people talk about. And I don’t really blame them. Being embarrassed to admit that you’ve got enough hair back there to even consider waxing seems pretty natural to me.
Of course, the perception we have of getting waxed is that it’s quite painful. And it does hurt a bit, but it’s not so painful that that should be a deterrent to you. When you think about it though, if people assume that getting their legs waxed will hurt a lot, they will probably be even less inclined towards waxing an even more sensitive area like their backside.
This is probably a contributing factor as to why it’s not that common. And then of course, the embarrassment around discussing it leads to there not being very much information about the process.
Many people think they might want to wax their butt and then just don’t do it because they are lacking in reliable information. So let’s talk a little bit about it right now. Here’s what you need to know about butt hair waxing.
Is it Necessary?
This is a question that you should really ask yourself before committing to a wax. I will start off by saying that like any other kind of body hair, it’s not dangerous or unhygienic to just leave it to grow.
When people wax their backsides it’s usually for an aesthetic purpose. So with that in mind, it’s entirely up to you whether or not you actually want to wax, and considering the somewhat awkward process as well as certain risks we’ll discuss below, you should think about it.
Consider how few people are actually going to see your butt hair aside from yourself. Your partner or any potential person you go to bed with probably doesn’t actually care that much. They’ve probably got their own which they never even thought about shaving.
Again though, it’s your body and if there is something you are personally unhappy with the appearance of, and it can be changed, it’s entirely up to you whether or not you do it. So if you think it’s worth it, then why not?
Options
There are a couple of different ways to go about waxing your butt. In terms of the wax itself, there are two different primary types, which are known as strip wax and hot wax. Generally people will use strip wax for larger surface areas.
So that’s the more common one used on legs and the chest area. This is because it binds itself to the skin and removes a lot of hair, very quickly. It’s not great for delicate skin so opting for hot wax would be best for your butt.
It only binds to the hair, meaning that it’s less painful. The downside is that it may leave a few tiny hairs behind. This might not be such a big deal for you since it will be less obvious than excess hair might be on your legs.
Then there is also sugaring, which is a lesser known type of waxing that is common for finer hairs and more sensitive skin. It’s completely organic and will also remove dead skin cells, but it is not as strong as other waxes.
It is the most natural method too so if that is a factor for you then you can consider it as an option.
Risks
As I mentioned a little bit earlier, there are a couple of risks here which you do need to keep in mind. There’s nothing too serious, especially if you do go for strip wax or sugaring, but it’s a bit more risky than a leg wax.
The issue is not that your butt might be more prone to infections if there is less hair there. While there are a few benefits to having butt hair, you’re not actually less at risk if you don’t have much down there.
But the process can cause some abrasion on the skin, and it’s an area which takes a little bit more time to heal. It’s also an area which has to deal with a lot of bacteria and can be somewhat tough to keep clean.
It’s something you really do need to keep in mind because you can end up with an infection that it might be hard to keep under control.
Post-Waxing Care
And with that in mind, what should you do after you’re finished waxing? Well the first thing is to use a dry bikini brush on the area the following day, because this will help to remove any dead skin cells left behind.
There are also a few things that you need to avoid. Sweat can cause a bit of irritation to the area while it’s healing, so for 48 hours you should avoid exerting yourself. Just keep yourself relaxed for a couple of days.
And when I say relax, I’m talking on the couch, don’t go into a sauna, steam room or hot tub because the warmth won’t help with healing. If you are dealing with a lot of irritation or sensitivity, treat it with some ice instead.
Also, avoid any activities between the sheets. You can control yourself for a few days!
Above all else, you should try to remember that waxing your butt hair isn’t something that you should be ashamed of. Really, there’s no more shame in this than there is in waxing anywhere else.
But it is an area that you need to treat with care, so be sure to keep all of this in mind if you do decide to wax there.
