Pre-Tax Self-Care: Using HSA/FSA Funds for Massage

Are you considering using your Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) to pay for massage therapy? The good news is that you can! But there are some important details to be aware of. In this post, we’ll guide you through the process of accessing the health benefits of massage alongside the tax benefits of an HSA or FSA…

Understanding Eligibility

Massage Therapy Coverage

Massage therapy is generally eligible for reimbursement by an FSA, HSA, or Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA) when used to treat a medical condition. So the first thing to do is check with your plan administrator to understand your plan’s coverage of medical massage therapy and reimbursement requirements.

Types of Accounts

Zeel, for instance, accepts HSA and FSA cards as payment, making it convenient (and tax-advantaged!) for you to include massage therapy in your wellness routine. However, just because the card is accepted by a payment processor does not mean the plan won’t reject the claim later. So it’s important to check with your plan specifically for limitations, pre-approval requirements, or other stipulations. Note that massage therapy is not covered by a Dependent Care FSA (DCFSA) or Limited-Purpose FSA (LPFSA) accounts.

The Role of a Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN)

What is an LMN?

An LMN, or Letter of Medical Necessity, is a document furnished by a healthcare practitioner attesting to the need for a service or product to treat or prevent a medical condition. In the case of massage, an LMN should also illustrate the scope of treatment, including frequency and duration.

Obtaining an LMN

Many HSA/FSA plans require an LMN from a physician to validate the clinical reasoning behind massage therapy as an eligible expense. The best way to obtain one is simply to have a chat with your primary care doctor about it. While you may not need the LMN to use your funds initially, it’s wise to keep it readily available, as your HSA/FSA administrator may request it later.

Content Requirements

While different plans’ LMN requirements vary, the most essential details are the clinician’s information (name, contact details, license number); your diagnosis (i.e. why you need massage); and the recommended scope of treatment (frequency or number or sessions).

Using Your HSA or FSA at Zeel

Paying with an HSA/FSA Card

Zeel accepts HSA and FSA cards as payment like any other credit card. You can add the card to your account as a saved form of payment and use it for any booking. Note, however, that we recommend keeping an alternate card on file as well, in case we’re unable to process the HSA/FSA for any reason (such as the funds limit being reached).

Reimbursement Process

If you need an itemized bill for HSA or FSA reimbursement, you can find a link to download it from your emailed receipt, which is sent upon completion of the massage.

Using your HSA or FSA to pay for Zeel massage is a great way to prioritize your wellness with a tax advantage! Remember to consult your plan administrator for personalized advice to ensure a smooth reimbursement process. By understanding the ins and outs of HSA/FSA usage, you can take advantage of the full extent of your health benefits while enjoying the personalized, at-home Zeel experience you love.
